This is the very first ‘Stage Presence’ exhibition, initiated by Cate Inglis, East Renfrewshire Council’s Cultural Coordinator. It was conceived as a visual arts programme that would bring together 200 pupils from 6 different schools in a collaborative project with 3 arts professionals; milliner & costume designer Sally-Ann Proven, painter & scenic artist, Audrey McMillan and me, Katherine Morley, theatre director & sound designer from Reeling & Writhing

The classes have explored the following works from Scottish writers;
Pirates of the Deep Green Sea, by Eric Linklater
Pure Dead Magic by Debi Gliori and
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde by R.L. Stevenson

After exploring the characters, locations and dialogue, pupils have fully designed and created their own visual and audio interpretation of each book. The three sound files on this blog are the work of St. Cadoc’s P6, St. John’s P5 and St. Thomas’ P5/6 classes.

The ‘Stage Presence’ project was designed to allow pupils and schools to work together to explore Theatre Design through aspects of Sound, Set and Costume. Working alongside the creative team, so many incredible young people have learnt new practical artistic skills and gained a new appreciation of the thought, work and communication within the context of arts and literature.

The resulting, superb work from all 6 schools is currently touring as a public exhibition, launching at Eastwood Park Gallery space on Wednesday 28th May 2008. Do email me if you’d like more information.

It’s been so much fun! Have a listen…

(Do turn your volume up to full. The work is beautifully subtle and should be played through fabulous speakers when possible!)
